White walls, even light and silence appear to let an artwork speak for itself. In fact, this arrangement pushes daily life, commerce, labour and politics beyond the frame. Once an object enters the white cube it is not only displayed; it is declared important, preservable and economically distinct.nnThe space offers concentration: the eye rests and detail becomes clear.
The problem begins when one method claims universality. Not all art was made for white silence. Good display should not seek one neutral template, but ask how a work relates to the sound, bodies, community and architecture from which it came.
