What Really Changes When We See the Original?

A reproduction carries the image, but scale, surface and conditions of encounter fall away.

A good screen image is invaluable for learning composition. It zooms, compares and makes distant works available. Yet one glowing rectangle equalises a tiny panel and a wall-sized canvas; paint skin, frame weight and the position of our body are reduced.nn‘Aura’ is not simply mystical superiority. Distance, crowds, security glass and waiting also belong to the encounter with an original.

Instead of choosing one, we can treat original and reproduction as different tools: reproduction teaches and circulates; the object bears witness to material time.
