Why Do Unfinished Works Pull Us Closer?

An incomplete surface may reveal artistic decisions more clearly than a polished finish.

A finished work can appear closed: decisions made and traces cleaned away. In an unfinished painting, drawing stops while becoming paint; bare support, scratched line and dense colour remain visible together. Viewers complete process as well as image.nnNot every incomplete work is a deliberate aesthetic. Death, a cancelled commission or technical trouble may have stopped it.

That uncertainty is precisely compelling. The open surface releases the artist from perfection and brings us close to a person hesitating, testing and working against time.
