Reynolds’s ‘Portrait of Mai’ Will Make Its US Debut

The 18th-century masterpiece is heading to Los Angeles for its West Coast debut.

Sir Joshua Reynolds’s ‘Portrait of Mai’, painted around 1776, will be shown in the Getty Center’s West Pavilion from 15 September 2026 to 14 March 2027. Jointly acquired by Getty and London’s National Portrait Gallery in 2023, the painting is travelling to the United States for the first time after a UK tour. The display renews attention on Mai’s exceptional place within the history of European portraiture.
