MoMA Traces a Century of Animation through Its Collection

It’s Alive! brings together more than 200 works spanning animation before and after the digital turn.

MoMA’s It’s Alive! A Century of Animation from the Collection opened on August 1, 2026, and remains on view through summer 2027. Centering the century before digital technology transformed the medium, the exhibition gathers more than 200 pieces of production art and films made between 1908 and 2020.nnFeaturing more than 35 artists and filmmakers, the selection reveals different stages of animation production, from drawing to film.

A theatrical retrospective of animated shorts and features by artists represented in the museum’s collection will accompany the exhibition.
